1. Exploration: your artistic process in creating a work- From reworking and recreating a dress into a two piece skirt with a train, I learned that taking piece by piece slow worked best for me. First, I sketched all of my ideas that I wanted to center the piece around, with certain materials that I would like to use. I knew I wanted to upcycle, so I thrifted an oversized 90s shirt and developed my ideas from the color and design on the shirt. I also had left over denim pieces in my scrap box, and found a way to incorporate it into my design. I feel that using different materials is what made my piece look so enigmatic. Same thing for my pearl overlay, embellishment, I knew that I wanted the structure to be expressive around the breast and back area, so I draped pearls all over those areas. Through taking my pieces step by step, I grew within each piece of artwork I created and diverged within my ideas as well because the projects were fairly different in class.
2. Personal Aesthetic: Everyone knows, fashion design and designing is not easy. However, developing my own personal aesthetic was quick and easy because I knew my favorite genres of fashion and what brands I was most inspired by, including Danielle Frankel, Glenn Martens, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen. Everytime I watch a new fashion show, I develop more into my personal style and aesthetic. I also love Pinterest, that is where I get most of my inspiration in my designs. Especially the pearl overlay, I searched on Pinterest for long hours searching for inspiration and the piece turned out exactly how I wanted it to look. When I develop meanings behind my pieces, I find that I appreciate them the most. That way I can find deeper meanings within my love for fashion, and each piece I make can mean something so important to me.
3. Growth: In regards to growth through my art pieces, I have grown the most through my creativity in designing pieces before sewing it together. Last year, I struggled with sewing techniques and draping, but with practice outside of class I have improved in those skills and in using different materials in my designs. I have also found that upcycling is one of my favorite ways to design and sew clothes without contributing to environmental issues including landfills. Though this year, Ms. Deak has helped me improve my creativity through exploring parts of fashion that I haven’t explored before, like creating an abstract pattern. Creating the pattern while incorporating my own illustrations with it gave me a lot of freedom to develop an edgy side to my designs. I can’t wait to improve more as the year goes by, I feel that advanced art has taught me to take risks in fashion which is bold and inspiring to me.
